Job Summary:

 

The School Based Services Educator/Advocate spends the school year in Hennepin County middle and high schools working on violence prevention and intervention directly with youth. The advocacy portion of the position requires three days/week in schools providing advocacy sessions for youth impacted by family violence, dating abuse, and sexual violence. The educator portion consists of creating and facilitating classroom presentations on topics such as Relationship Abuse, Sexual Violence, Gender Stereotypes, and other related topics. Presentations will occur throughout our entire Hennepin County service area. This is a full-time position and the summer is spent building and enhancing the quality and scope of the program.


Experience/Qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant experience or Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • Strong skills around empathy, listening, and supporting others.
  • Passionate about social justice issues.
  • Knowledgeable and interested in learning about violence prevention, dating violence, bullying, anger, family violence, and crisis intervention, preferably regarding domestic violence and sexual violence.
  • Knowledge of resources and/or how to access them.
  • Experience in providing educational services or violence prevention programming to children, youth, and their parents preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school administrators and staff
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle, possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license, and provide proof of ongoing automobile insurance (driver’s license and auto insurance must be on file with HR).

Essential Functions:

 Direct Service :
  • Provide individual support/education with adolescents referred for dating violence, bullying, family violence issues, anger, etc.
  • Facilitate school support groups on topics such as anger and bullying, relationship violence, mentorship, and gender specific discussion groups.
  • Maintain a level of expertise surrounding bullying, relationship violence, harassment, and sexual violence.
  • Refer youth to relevant community resources.
  • Complete Child Protection Reports as necessary.
  • Must be able to work early mornings based on school schedules.

 

Presentation Creation/Facilitation:
  • Facilitate violence prevention presentations to middle and high school students and staff.
  • Provide training, education, and discussion group facilitation for various small groups: parents, teachers, peer mediators, athletic groups, and volunteers.
  • Actively participate in creating and evaluating School-Based Curriculum and presentations to ensure it is relevant and aligns with best practices.
  • Assist with outreach efforts in the form of awareness campaigns, and collaborate with community organizations or community partners.

 

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Participate in program meetings. Meetings are held at our Minneapolis and Bloomington office locations, or virtually.
  • Maintain consistent communication with colleagues while working from various locations.
  • Complete data entry in a timely manner.
  • Accurately document critical incidents or mandated reporting situations.
  • Any and all duties as assigned.

Outreach / Collaboration Duties:
  • Attend community meetings and initiatives, as assigned.
  • Assist in program public relations and marketing for the program and the agency.
Professional Development:
  • Attend workshops, trainings, and conferences for increasing professional skills.
Organizational Expectations:
  • Complete a required 40 Hour Sexual Assault Advocacy training within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Must provide own transportation to and from assigned schools. Mileage reimbursements are provided by Cornerstone.
  • Participate on internal committees as assigned.
  • Attend all-staff meetings and trainings.
  • Promote Cornerstone mission and philosophy.
  • Display high ethical/professional standards.
Physical Demands: 
  • Regularly speaking at an audible level to a classroom of up to 40 students for an entire school day.
  • The employee may be required to transport presentation equipment and outreach materials.
