Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a professional nursing supervisory position in the Florida Department of Health in Bay County’s (DOH Bay) School Health Program, providing school health services to assigned schools and students while school is in session, in accordance with the Supplemental School Health Program. This position is responsible for the supervision of staff including appraisals, planning and directing work, approving leave, and having the authority for hiring and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions. The incumbent in this position is responsible for the integrity and confidentiality of data sets under his/her control and may use DOH IT resources to visit Internet sites needed to perform the duties of this position. Moderate decision-making is required under limited supervision. The incumbent may adapt existing procedures to meet new situations and work independently toward achieving general results. The incumbent in this position will communicate with subordinates and other managers as required, to coordinate efforts or to supervise others within DOH Bay. The position requires planning and scheduling activities to accomplish individual and program goals and objectives. The incumbent needs to possess specific School Health Nursing knowledge and works under indirect supervision.

 

This professional position serves as the School Health Coordinator and supervisor of the locally designed Supplement School Health Program staff. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing and coordinating the Bay County School Health Plan. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Health Nursing Director-SES.

 

Supervises Senior Community Health Nurses and Administrative Assistant I assigned to the DOH Bay School Health Program for Bay County schools. Responsible for monitoring the daily activities, as assigned, in each of the schools covered under the School Health Services Plan. Responsible for training and implementation of program, as well as monitoring those under his/her supervision to ensure quality and quantity of work performed. Advises and counsels those under direct supervision about professional growth and advanced education. Responsible for writing performance standards, job descriptions, and probationary, annual and other reviews as to work performance of each employee. Responsible for supervising employees in the coordination and performance of daily duties per the current School Health Services Plan and Memorandum of Understandings involving health care provided to students, and assuring that proper federal, state and county guidelines are followed. Compiles pertinent data required for locally designed school health projects. This position may require a temporary school assignment to cover services. Responsible for budget preparation and disbursement of funds, as allocated by grants and school health budget. Is responsible for on-going monitoring of the program, to include completion of reports in a timely manner, as well as supervision of employees assigned to this program.

 

Conducts quality assurance activities to evaluate effectiveness of the DOH Bay School Health Program. Responsible for assisting with screening programs conducted in schools, and teaching volunteers screening techniques and correct usage of the audio/ visual equipment. Attends School Health Advisory Committee meetings and serves as resource person to school personnel. Reads assigned materials. Serves on DOH Bay internal committees as requested and indicated.

 

Participates in staff meetings, staff development, and continuing education programs. Suggest activities to enhance education of students in areas of health concerns. This position is the "Information Custodian" and is responsible for the security and confidentiality of all information contained within this information set: School Health. This position has the "Need to Know" for the following information sets: Medical records and storage, immunization records, nursing logs, medications, labs, x-rays, general records, computer generated records/listings and communicable disease reporting.

 

Works in the DOH Bay clinic or other areas, as needed and assigned. Provides individual counseling and education classes for a variety of health topics. Focusing on promoting the health of students, reducing risk-taking behavior, and reducing teen pregnancy.

 

Completes Employee Activity Reports, Health Management Services coding, leave, attendance and travel records as required. Fulfills requirements for timeliness of data submission and annual report data collection.

 

Performs other duties as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with medical records, school health records, nursing logs, medications, lab, x-rays and computer generated/listings.
  • Excellent communication, supervisory, and training skills: works well independently, develops and leads effective work teams; networks and communicates (written and verbally) effectively to accomplish goals.
  • Must be physically able to walk and stand for long periods of time, bend, climb one flight of steps, turn patients, and lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Computer skills for word processing and database use.

 

Qualifications:

Valid driver’s license; active Florida Registered Nurse license or a multi-state license from another compact state.
